I tried telling Inkscape that no, I did not want to reopen my windows. I tried moving all the many bits of Ink/Stitch out of their folder and into the extensions folder. Inkscape said that I had been trying to open windows when it had been shut down and did I want to reopen them. I then shut down Inkscape (oops!) and restarted it. But I did follow the rest of the Ink/Stitch directions: I put the zip file in the extensions folder and decompressed it there, where it made a folder for all the many Ink/Stitch bits. Next options: - Restore a Time Machine Back-up from before High Sierra was installed and update it to High Sierra - Clean install and copy all my files from the most recent Time Machine Back-up.
